I'd like to take a moment to celebrate bird feeders. We have two feeders that we try to keep full, and at any given moment there will be at least fifty birds in our tiny city backyard: plump pigeons perched on the awning frame, pretty little grey doves wandering around with their big beautiful eyes, and all sorts of finches and wrens, chickadees and cardinals bouncing all over the place. It's pretty great.
And all the while as I was painting these two raw fish, that were just sitting out on the dining room table being all fresh and fishy, Clementine was crouched by the glass back door. Tail swooping side to side. Every so often jumping into the ficus to attack the low-hanging branches. Once the painting was finished, away the fish went - without so much as a single sniff by a little pink nose, or a gentle bat of a furry white paw.
Here's to bird feeders! (And to a Happy New Year!)
